Technorati.com is a directory that rates blogs with its Technorati Authority. Claiming blogs on this site can increase traffic from the millions of blogs it catalogs.

Editor's Choice

A search engine that is focused on providing the newest relevant information available, Technorati.com catalogs blogs, news stories, and other syndicated web feeds. The site organizes information based on tags assigned both by blog authors and other Technorati.com users, much in the way that Twitter users organize information with hashtags. While doing so, the site gives priority to blogs that have a high Technorati Authority, which is a measure of the number of blogs that have recently linked to a given site. Claiming a blog on Technorati.com gives its owner tools to better leverage the blog directory's popularity.

Claiming a Blog

In order to claim a blog at Technorati.com, one must have posting access to the blog, that is, a username and password. Technorati.com uses online tools to verify this access.

  1. Make note of your blog's web address.
  2. Visit the claim your blog on Technorati link and enter this URL in the window provided.
  3. Click the "Begin Claim" button.
  4. If the blog is hosted on a site that utilizes OpenID, an open source password system, then the blog host will verify the username and password. Note: this may cause the blog's hosting website to open a window and request verification. As always, only enter passwords when visiting a trusted site.
  5. For other blogs, Technorati will provide some html that must be posted in the blog. Copy this code to the clipboard.
  6. In a new browser window or tab, create a new blog post. Paste the html into the edit window and publish the post.
  7. Return to the window which was left open at Technorati.com.
  8. Click the "Complete Claim" button.
  9. The claim will be completed, and its owner will be permitted to describe and tag the blog.

Leveraging a Technorati Blog

Once a blog is claimed on Technorati.com its owner can track its popularity, which is particularly helpful for monetized blogs, or used as business newsletters. Some tips for blog optimization:

  • Review the article “What is Authority?” to gain an understanding of how inbound links improve blog ranking.
  • Tag the blog on its Technorati.com page. The site will do so based upon tags in the blog posts themselves, but this will speed up the process.
  • Ping your blog. On the right-hand side of the site's home page is a list of all blogs claimed, including the last time Technorati.com pinged the blog – sent out an inquiry to see if there has been any new posts. Click the green “ping” button to send that inquiry, and then follow the site's advice on automating the process in the future.
  • Learn how to build your blog's authority.
