How to Make Affiliate Sales With a Blog

An affiliate marketing program can be a lucrative way of monetizing a blog as long as affiliate advertising doesn't eclipse the content and purpose of the blog.

Blogs are used for a number of marketing purposes, but one of the most lucrative of these is affiliate sales. Any blog can be used for affiliate advertising as long as the blog accomplishes two main goals- offering useful or entertaining content and establishing credibility.

Providing Content

A blog that is started with the sole intention of affiliate marketing isn't doomed to fail, but it has to provide something other than marketing for an affiliate program. To be successful, there must be a reason for readers to come to the blog and to return to it again to read new posts.

Having informational content in a blog is not just a way to draw in readers and bring them back again. Useful content also establishes the blogger as someone who is credible enough to offer valid opinions on retail items.

For the best results, the affiliate links should be included sparingly- no more than one or twice in a post. And to avoid the pitfalls of a blog that reads like a commercial, the products being sold through the affiliate marketing program should be relevant to the topic of the blog.

Inserting Affiliate Links

After joining an affiliate marketing program, the program itself will supply the links and ads needed to make sales. Links can be added in the course of a blog post in the place it is most relevant. Linking a word or phrase in the post to an affiliate program link makes the advertising far less apparent than a banner ad or other noticeable marketing technique.

For those unfamiliar with affiliate marketing, these links may not be seen as marketing at all. And because the links are small and less noticeable, they won't make a blog look like a site dedicated to making affiliate sales.

Another option is to add a permanent sales link to one side of the blog. Most affiliate programs offer ad code that can easily be placed on a blog. This can free up the blog posts for the informational content that will bring in readers while exposing all readers to the ad.

Customizing Affiliate Advertising

Some affiliate programs have customizable links that allow a marketer to create an add that is closely tailored to their blog's demographic. Amazon has a Carousel widget that can be loaded with up to 10 products that are chosen by the affiliate program member. This allows the marketer to choose the items that his audience is most likely to buy.

Many other affiliate programs have interactive or scrolling ads that can be placed to the side of a blog. These can often be created to highlight products that are based on a keyword that the marketer chooses or a type of product that will be of interest to readers.
